Home Finishes Selection Process

Updated: Jan 4

Building a Custom home means total freedom! Freedom to choose the floor plan, freedom for where the house goes on the lot, freedom of choice on every single detail of your home. Even down to the doorknobs. This freedom allows you to make sure your custom home is exactly what you want from day one of moving in.

Sometimes all this freedom, and lists of all the selections that need to be made for a custom home, can feel overwhelming. Our team is there to support and help every step of the way!

Here is an idea of the major selections that need to be made:

  • Flooring

  • Paint Colors

  • Cabinets

  • Countertops

  • Tile

  • Stone

While there are many more selections, these are the ones we see that tend to dictate the style and color palette of the home.

We have our clients get on Pinterest or Houzz and save images of homes they like, with comments about what specifically what they like in the picture. Is it the color of the cabinets? The floor color, or layout? The paint combos and over all palette? The more information our clients give us, the better we are at bringing their vision to life.

This allows us to have a conversation and hone in on the design style of the home. It helps us find out what our clients like or don't like. It's a great conversation point and really helps us further understand our clients and their needs.

Usually, we suggest flooring and tile to be selected first. The other selections tend to run in much more limited color pallets that can be adjusted to match under tones. Since the flooring and tile (think back splashes and bathroom showers) tend to run through the entire home it's a great foundation to start with.

Together we will narrow down styles and colors you like for hardwood, carpet, and tile prior to going to our vendor for selections. Then we send that information, plus the budget, to our flooring supplier and set a meeting time. Some clients go at it with our vendor alone, others ask our design input to make sure the house is cohesive.

We have found most people can be shocked that this meeting can be anywhere from 1-5 hours! But with every selection to be made, and every room being able to be different, it is a lot of choices.

After the flooring meeting the next big one is cabinets, followed by counter tops, then paint. We suggest to our clients that as they make selections, they take samples or pictures with them of each item for the next selection. Floor samples, cabinet colors, etc. will help to make sure the paint and stone all match the undertones and over all color palette of the home.

We will help to make this process as fun and easy as possible. Selecting every piece of your custom home is such a fulfilling experience and we are here to help our clients every step of the way!
